How Singing Can Make You Healthy And Happy
79
Singing is your birthright
Singing belongs to everyone, not just a selected few. And because singing can make you healthy and happy, now is the time to claim that right and to fill your heart and soul with song.
You can even write your own song ( compose ), by adding a melody to your very thoughts. You can make up any melody you like. Don't judge your composition. Sing your words and thoughts freely and make it fun.
When I teach new students to singi, I ask each one to introduce themselves by singing their first and last name. The second step to get each one to sing is to add to their name what it is they love to do.
An example: Sing - "My name is hub honey and I love to write." Make your melody go up and down, fast or slow, high and low. Forget about making sense, how you sound or if it's right or wrong. Just do it!
When you were born, you sang your first song in the form of a very loud, well formed, cry. You didn't give a hoot about anyone in the room liking your cry. You formed your pitch all by yourself and resonated your full marvelous sound as you proudly announced your arrival into this wonderful world.
Your own unique and individual sound is waiting to be released and set free. The reward for singing your song is less stress, a good feeling and better health.
And this...is How Singing Can Make You Healthy and Happy.
Keep Healthy by Singing
Supporting my family
I love to sing. My singing voice and piano stylings supported three children, a dog and me.
I worked hard. If I wasn't on a stage somewhere in Hawaii or out in the middle of the ocean on a cruise ship performing, I was busy using my voice to teach others how to sing. I'm not complaining, in fact I am thankful that I could make a good living for my family doing what I love most. I have been able to live my dream and share my passion through music.
But more importantly, I've been a pretty happy person in spite of life's ups and downs. And I know there is a direct connection to singing and being happy.
And it doesn't matter whether you sing well or just get buy. Can't carry a tune in a bucket you say? So what? It isn't great singing that makes you happy and healthy. It's the act of singing that does the job.
Singing is merely "sustained speech." Just start with one word and hold on to it and that, my friend is singing.
.
Just Sing, Sing a Song
The late Karen Carpenter, had a voice of velvet. Along with her brother Richard, they recorded a string of top 10 hits in the early 70's. Karen died of heart failure brought on by anorexia nervosa in February of '83.
"Sing" Was one of Karen's most loved songs. It was written by Louis Prima and contains a wonderful message for us all.
Sing - sing a song
Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things, not bad
Sing of happy not sad
Sing - sing a song
Make it happy
To last your whole life long
Don't care if it's not good enough
For anyone else to hear
Just sing - sing a song.
So much wisdom is found in this song. What do we care whether others like our singing or not? Singing is fun and singing is free. And what's more...it's healthy.
You're going to be surprised as you discover the wonderful health benefits of singing a song. And you'll be delighted to learn just How Singing Can Make You Healthy And Happy.
Learning How Singing Can Make You Healthy And Happy
Singing Boosts Your Immune System.
Yes, that's right. It really does and studies have shown this to be absolutely true. Just ask the research team at the University of California. Studies have also been done at Duke and Harvard with more and more Universities finding a direct relationship between the immune system, singing , acting and a positive attitude sprinkled with laughter.
Singing tends to boost immunoglobulin A (an antibody that fights upper respiratory disease); and it tends to boost killer T-cells, which are antibodies that fight infection.
Our immune system is being challenged constantly by making unhealthy choices when we eat as well as lack of exercise, pollution and stress. If we don't have a strong immune system we become susceptible to germs.
I'd love for you to begin the habit of singing every day. It only takes a couple of minutes and you can combine it with other activities.
Singing is easy and fun and can be done while driving, cleaning, showering, gardening and doing laundry. And you don't have to sound like your favorite vocalist to sing. If you can speak, you can sing. Anyone can sing.

Singing helps stroke victims to speak again
Stroke victims can be helped by singing. The area of the brain which controls singing is in a different area than for speaking. So if the speech is affected during a stroke, they can learn to make vowel sounds by singing.
At Harvard Medical School in Boston, Dr. Gottfried Schlaug (neurology professor), led a trial on this. He discovered that after a single session, stroke patients who were are not able to form any intelligible words learned to say the phrase "I am thirsty" by combining each syllable with the note of a melody.
More benefits from singing
The health benefits of singing are both physical and psychological.
- Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting.
- Singing has psychological benefits because of its positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being. (Another reason I smile more than the average bear.)
- Singing exercises your heart and lungs therefore prolonging life.
- Singing makes you feel good because it produces endorphins.
- Your posture will improve as you sing.
- Singing improves mental alertness.
- Circulation improves when singing.
- Belly breathing used in singing aids in relaxation of body and mind.
"The only thing better than singing is more singing," said Ella Fitzgerald.
I'ts ok...go ahead and take my leg.
Smiling for me is as natural as singing. I grew up with a Daddy who always had a smile on his face and a song to sing. And my Daddy went through one tragedy after another. He certainly didn't have much to smile about. But, he always managed to see something positive in any trial that would come his way. I remember how he always sang a song or hummed a happy tune, even in the darkest of times.
Daddy suffered a good deal of pain in his 5'8" body. While traveling with my Mother in Kearney Nebraska, a car hit them head on, completely destroying the car and crushing my father's right ankle. The ankle had to be completely re-built and left him with pain for the rest of his life.
His left arm was damaged and had a steel plate where bone was shattered. Mama broke her back in several places and was told she would never walk again. Ha! Those doctors didn't know my mom.
When Daddy was in his early sixties, he was diagnosed with diabetes and put on medication and shots of insulin. Mama worked hard to keep him on a healthy diet which wasn't easy back then.
He developed ulcers on the bottom of his right foot. I would bathe his feet in warm water and after drying them, massage the feet to help circulation. One day we noticed his foot was discolored. Then it began to turn black and he was hospitalized.
Gangrene had set in and after several days of treatment, the infection in the foot began to travel up the leg. The Doctors sadly told Daddy that his leg would have to be amputated above the knee. My father smiled boldly at the team of Doctors and replied, "That's ok. Don't you worry about it. I will have my good leg back again someday." He sang as he was taken to the operating room.
Make the choice to sing
I sincerely want to encourage you to make the choice to sing. And encourage family members to sing as well. Group singing is sometimes easier because the tune is being shared by others.
Older folks who spend endless days filled with loneliness just love to hear singing. Take your family to a rest home or nursing home for the elderly and entertain them with a song or two.
Join a church or community choir. The world will never turn down a song - especially when it comes from the heart.

You always writer so well to encourage us to sing and I do sing in the shower. Voted up, interesting and useful.
I love love love to sing! It is so good for the soul! I dont care if I know the words of not..it is going to come out...lol Up and useful!
Vocalcoach, this is one of my favorite hubs of yours! I totally totally am giving this a standing ovation, if only you could see me!
Yes, there are biological impacts of singing too - the social bonding hormone, oxytocin increases when one sings in choirs too.
I really believe in the power of music to bring healing, joy and build relationships. Thank you so much for writing this hub! I hope many people read it!
I knew that signing – and music for that matter – boosted our spirits, but had no idea of the physical and psychological benefits.
Your dad sounds like was quite a remarkable man; you were blessed to have him as a father. I am sorry he had to suffer through so many tragedies in his life.
I thoroughly enjoyed this hub. Voted up and away! :-)
I always feel sad about myself as a girl who does not have good voice and cannot sing well at all. Now, I feel a little different. So what? How about I just repeat my "first song in the form of very loud"? I'll get benefit from it.
I played the flute in elementary school and had to perform a recital with the band for the kindergarten students. I remember playing Mary Had a Little Lamb (I think it was) and at the end of the song, I felt exhilarated. My young mind couldn't figure out why then, but I believe it was a combination of factors, some of which you have mentioned in this very excellent hub about singing. My body was oxygenated and it must have produced some endorphins because I was floating for several minutes afterwards.
Karaoke is very popular here in Hawaii, but I don't get to do it as much as I would like. I enjoying singing, can carry a halfway decent tune, and, after reading this hub, plan to do more of it.
Thanks so much for sharing the health benefits of singing. Rated up, useful, and (very) interesting!
I've spent many hours trying to convince a friend (who really can't carry a tune) that it doesn't matter and she can sing anyway however it pleases her. I've as yet to convince her (unless she sings on the sly) but can't imagine not singing. Music has been a huge part of my whole life -- including singing and my own band for some years. Now, well I entertain the dog and cat and occasionally the dog joins in! How great is that (or maybe he's trying to tell me something)? Exceptional Hub with good advice! Voted up. Best, Sis
What a lovely hub, Audrey. You have set a new standard of excellence, m'dear, for the rest of us to follow. How can anyone not want to sing their little hearts out after reading all this positive information?
You are so right. Singing promotes physical, mental and emotional health. Here's to you, a happy survivor who happens to have a good singing voice. From a happy survivor who can only carry a tune in a bucket but loves to sing regardless.
Hi. Vibrant article. My singing and composing pleases me, but it has cats caterwauling, babies screaming, and even my budgies trying to escape into the arms of a sparrowhawk.
So nice for you that you can more than hold a tune.
Bob
Oh Audrey, this is a lovely, lovely hub!
I love singing and I always feel lifted and happier for singing, but dare not sing within anyone's earshot, I sound terrible!!!
That was a really nice song by the Carpenters, Karen's voice was so beautiful.
Thank you for sharing and voting up, best wishes Lesley
This is such a positive hub, giving hope and encouragement to all. I do love to sing and have even been known to compose as well.
Perhaps we'll hear a hub of your singing some day soon.
All the best.
I agree VC this is one your finest hubs. It reminded me of how powerful and healing it is to sing. I used to sing professionally too until my singing voice went to hell in a hand-basket. I still enjoyed making up silly songs and singing to my pet parrot who even learned the tunes. Now that he's gone and I've lost my best audience, I stopped. Thanks for this powerful reminder! I just hope the neighbors don't come by asking me to turn down the TV :)
Very interesting read - Thousands will be inspired by reading this Hub. I read somewhere that even humming had a healthy effect on us. Your parents story is touching. Your dad is so positive....
I know that Karen Carpenter song by heart, my mum loves the Carpenters. I used to sing along with her as a kid, from the album Cover. :)
Thanks for a wonderful share.
Awesome stuff,vocalcoach!
Something about singing is freeing to me.I hit the gym early an hour before the next person usually I arrive with the staff.I sing all through my workout,I turn on the radio to my favorite station start working out and singing. From the bike, jumping rope and weight room I sing and pump weight.I hit the pool next where the seniors do water aerobic and I lap swim. The seniors sing during their water aerobics it's reall quite awesome.
Sing out loud,sing out strong!
Respect!
I agree. I love to sing and have been doing so since I was old enough to hold my brush up to my lips and pretend it was a microphone. When I drive, I sing and I swear I could drive straight across the country. My daughter is the one who actually has a fantastic voice, so I also have the pleasure of listening to her stuff. Singing rocks!
This was fascinating and inspiring hub. I do agree with you that singing make us healthy and happy. By singing I can release stress and make laugh as well. Mouth exercise, sharing smile and everything we have during singing a song. Thank you very much for writing and share with us. Good job and rated up (useful, awesome, beautiful and interesting). Cheers....
Blessing,
Well done as always! Very inspiring. I can't imagine not having singing as a regular part of my life.
Singing is a natural thing for people. My little boy sings himself to sleep at night. I love to hear that sweet voice. I cannot carry a tune but that does not stop me from singing. My little MiraBella is about Clancey's size and I sing to her. Thanks vocalcoach for a beautiful Hub.
I once went outside and sang to the birds. They all migrated south. It was in July.
This is a fabulous and inspiring hub! I love it! I had forgotten about the song, "Sing, Sing a Song". Thank you for reminding me. Voted up, useful, etc.
Hi Vocalcoach
Fantastic hub. It reminded me that I need to sing more. I never realized that singing had so many benefits.
I have started my day off singing, Just Sing, Sing a Song. :-)
Voted up and away!
Wishing you a wonderful day.
I have noticed that I feel happier when I sing and dance with my boys. It also lifts the mood of the entire family. Singing really is a way to connect. Thanks!
What a joyful and inspiring hub!
I remember that my father was always singing and humming. His voice was so beautiful, and his singing always made me so happy. I'm not blessed with his voice, but I do hum throughout the day.
I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful hub.
Voted up up and away and sharing.
I asolutely loved this hub. I love singing. It takes all the stress away. I grew up with my mum singing around the house and I think it gave me the idea that she is always happy! =) singing can make a lot for you! thank you for this interesting post.. voting up, no doubt! SHARING!
So UPBEAT and Fun to read and look at Vocalcoach. I do NOT have a great singing Voice, but it's so true, when we are Singing I am Happy and especially when I remember the words to an Old Song on the Radio. I just feel good singing along! Thanks for the Smile Friend.
I love to sing and do it daily. I probably shouldn't, but I do it anyway:)
When I was in school I was always in choirs. It was my dream to become a famous singer. My parents thought I had a good voice but as I got older I never carried through will any vocal lessons and really wish I had of. I sing all the time and enjoy it very much.
Enjoyed your hub and would love to hear you sing. Do you happen to have a YouTube video out there somewhere or perhaps a hub where I could hear you?
I'm amazed at the health benefits of singing but I suppose it makes sense. Never looked at singing in this way before. Excellent hub, really enjoyable and very uplifting. Thank you, voted up etc.
This is terrific! I always feel great after I finish singing. It just leaves me in a great mood. Great hub, thanks!
Great hub, vocal-coach.
I love singing and it sure helps me de-stress.
voted up as awesome!
What a great hub! There are many times when I am working (I am a Flagger,) that I sing. Most people can't hear me because of the machinery, so I have the opportunity to experiment LOL.
What a great inspirational article!
You wouldn't want to hear me sing...I frequently listen to recordings of others singing while I'm writing.
Excellent hub and great back-up in sharing your story about your Dad. I think music has a tremendous effect on our lives and I agree with you that we should all wake up singing. It doesn't have to be perfect as long as it's a beautiful noise, right? Thumbs up on a wonderful uplifting hub! Thank you.
Fabulous Hub Vocal Coach! You taught me the art of music and I have always applied it to my life. Thank you for teaching me how to play the piano and for dressing me up like Dolly Levi!
Really inspiring hub! I love singing, and often enjoy my weekends with friends in KTV. Well, I completely agree with you that singing will benefit for one's mood and health. You have made a great work. Voted up!
Very upbeat information. I sing with my choir in church, it always makes me feel energized and alive. Singing really does release endorphins in the body relieving stress. Voted up!
I just have to come back to this wonderful hub and sing Happy Birthday to you on this special day. I wish you a wonderful day with lots of beautiful music!
What a great hub! I love to sing and always have. Singing has always been a part of my life: I sang as a child in school, in choirs, in Talent Shows, at weddings, in the car, in the shower, etc. I find it is one of the only things--aside from massive amounts of chocolate--that can truly lift my spirits. When I was teaching, I would sing in the mornings on my long drive to work to give me a good start to the day, and on the long drive home I would sing to relieve stress. I even found (and this is not recommended unless you are a veteran teacher, lol) that singing in my classroom helped to calm my students down and have them focus on the task at hand.
Now that I have kids, I have shared my love of singing with them. It has become a habit now to turn on some music in the kitchen while I am working on dinner and sing with my son who has a pretty good singing voice for someone who's only 3 1/2. It really has become one of my favorite parts of the day!
This really is a wonderful hub! Voted up, useful and awesome. Happy birthday! :D
Let me begin with something only marginally related to your hub: You are an inspiring lady. I have always loved to sing, and find it heartening to read about someone who has been able to live their life doing it professionally.
Now... on to your hub. This is incredibly interesting article. I've always known that when I sing, and I mean really, truly put everything into it, I feel not only emotionally better, but physically. Although I was always thrilled by that, I never really knew why. This hub has really enlightened me.
Thank you for taking so much time to put this hub together. I will be sharing it with others, and hopefully encouraging them to sing with me. :-)
Well done vocalcoach. Very informative and interesting.
Wow - simply awesomme - you are so, so right!
Let's hear it for singing!! Everyday!! Thank you Audrey!
I sing quite a lot but my daughter sings brilliantly (she's on You Tube and recently sang at a big venue near where we live) so whilst I do hum and sing whilst doing stuff like housework; I am often drowned out by her belting out some chart hits - I don't mind though, I know she gets as much out of the action of singing as I do - though I may have seen her put her fingers in her ears when I'm doing it. Voted up.
You are right. Music is a wonderful gift from heaven upon mankind. We get elated when harmonious vibes come our way. Good share
Guess what I am doing almost 24/7....except for at work or when I am sleeping...I listen to music and sing along! Just love music - it is my life. And I think it is the strongest memory for my kids - Mom in the car driving and singing along!
I've been singing along since I was a young girl....and I would never stop.
My son once had a friend over and I had to bring him home. Just before we got in the car my son prepared his friend:"Oh, my Mom never drives without music and she sings along"....I had to grin and laugh. Never will forget this incident! Yes, that's his mom.
Hi, Vocal Coach - I love this hub (voted up). One day I said something to my next door neighbor (this was years ago) and said that I was sorry if we made a lot of noise - we are a rather loud bunch. She laughed. She said what she hears coming out of our house is singing! I thought that was so cool! But maybe she didn't mean it as a compliment, haha.
The story about your dad was so sweet and beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. Your father sounds awesome. My own dad was a great whistler.
I now understand why when I sing I start to feel good and happy. All these reasons make me smile. Also, when I do healing work I also do some chants. It somehow comforts the person. Thanks for this. :)
Vocalcoach, you can see her by typing in 'adamandjaney' on You Tube, there are a few videos of her there with her guitarist/other band member, Adam.
Here is her acoustic rendition of 'Set Fire To The Rain' by Adele, sang in my spare room!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjgjF4cSLVg
Hope you like it.
What a fabulous hub about the health benefits of singing regardless of whether or not we have a singing voice that's deemed pleasing to others.
I love the way you included research and personal stories to back up what you were saying and I was not aware of the specific health benefits of singing before reading this hub.
There is a woman in my town who takes a group of Alzheimer's patients to other senior centers and schools during the Christmas Season and the Alzheimer's patients sing Christmas Carols onstage and entertain large groups. The woman said that they remember the tunes and songs automatically once she prompts them and that it's very evident from the smiles on their faces that the patients enjoy giving the performances even though they don't remember it afterwards!
As a homecare nurse I'd seen individual Alzheimer's patients respond positively to singing, especially if it was done with young children but I was amazed that a whole group could perform onstage together.
Thanks for sharing this upbeat hub that shows us the joys and benefits of singing and I'm so glad you liked the songs I picked out for you in my ice cream hub!
Sending a Bouquet of Hub Hugs to you, my talented singing friend,
Gail
I thought I would drop in since I hadn't for a while. The title caught my eye. I love to sing....I don't do it very well but it doesn't stop me when I doing the housework, working in the yard or garden, in the car...and it does make me happen and the burden of whatever I am doing lighter.
Great hub....enjoyed every bit of it very, very much.
I am so glad I read this hub. I, like many of the others who have commented, have been singing all my life. First with my father while he played piano, then in school choirs, then in a church folk group, and lastly to my children and grandchildren. The funny thing is I always sang the Carpenter song to them to teach them so they would know they didn't have to worry if they were "good enough for anyone else to hear" as long as they just sang. I love music and music and singing go hand in hand. (As you know I've written several hubs about music.) Also, might I just add, when you sing religious songs you pray twice!
Lastly, I had to comment about your Dad, he must've been a fantastic person and it would seem to me he left a wonderful legacy to you which you continue to live and I'm sure give to your children.
Voted across the board!! Thanks for SHARING.
Your hub is truly inspiring! I've always loved to sing, (though those around me don't love to hear me)and I do feel better when I do so. I never realized that there are actually health benefits to singing! I'm a firm believer that people should sing - even if they sign off key and don't know the words. It brings a smile to everyone's face -- just like this hub! Voted up and shared!
I taught my daughter to speak by singing to her. I made up a song called Jesus I Love You. She loved that song. Needless to say her first words her Jesus and mom.
I will admit that I sing the most when I am happy. Maybe I should sing a little more to add a boost to my immune system.
I enjoyed this hub very much. Oh, and the song by Karen Carpenter is sang on Sesame Street. I know that one pretty well. Everyone has a voice, just as I say that everyone has a dance.
Great hub!

Great article vocal coach. I love to sing, too bad I don't have a great voice for it. However it doesn't matter to me, when I feel like it, I sing.
And when I'm under a lot of stress or feel nervous about something, I sing Christmas songs. For some reason, it eases my nerves everytime.
Going to a job interview, then sing.
Going to the doctor and feeling nervous,I sing.
Flying on a plane,(I hate to fly), I sing.
I thought you might like that. :) Have a song-filled day!
