The wonderful world of singing
Singing is one of the most enjoyable activities we can do. And as far as communication goes, singing is much more effective and enjoyable than a long speech. I'd rather listen to a sermon presented by singing than speaking any time.
Singing sort of goes hand-in-hand with a nice hot shower, a birthday party, worship and praise and of course, Christmas. Singing has been around since the beginning of time (3500 B.C.E.) and I guarantee you, it will continue its popularity through out eternity if I have anything to say about it.
But did you know that singing provides physical and mental benefits as well? Aside from the fact that singing clears the mind of clutter and negativity, it also gives your immune system a boost. It truly does.
Come with me now, to explore more of the wonderful reasons to sing.
Reason # 1
In a world of political, economic and personal disintegration, music is not a luxury but a necessity-not simply because it is theraputic nor because it is the 'universal language,' but because it is the persistent focus of man's intelligence, aspiration and good will.
You have been blessed with a physical body which is also a musical instrument. Think of it! All you have to do to "play" your instrument is to inhale, sustain your speaking voice using a variety of pitch and sounds, then exhale. It's really quite remarkable when you think about it.
Never mind that your voice may not have a professional and pleasing sound. Sing anyhow. Why? Take a look at the first reason.
- Singing is healthy for us. It develops the lungs and purifies the blood by emptying more completely the lungs of used air and filling them deeply with fresh air. Our lungs never stop working for us. They carry oxygen to the blood and remove toxic gases 24 hours a day, everyday. This process works better as we learn to breathe by using the diaphragmatic muscle. Not only are we exercising our lungs a we sing, we are also exercising our heart.
I'd also like to emphasize how singing detoxifies our lymphatic system. Through the process of deep breathing, when we sing, we clear the lymphatic system of toxins, thereby supporting our immune system.
To summarize: Singing can help to promote lung development as well as promote oxygen to the blood system and the brain.
Studies have show that singing increases endorphins in the brain causing you to feel good and even change your emotional mood. Read more about the healthy reasones to sing.
Reason # 2
Singing gives a pleasanter, richer speaking voice and improved speech. This adds to the charm of the personality. Through voice lessons, with a qualified teacher, articulation is stressed which adds clarity to the speaking voice.
Reason # 3
Singing strengthens the memory and the power of concentration. When you sing, you are exercising your brain. And like the rest of your body the brain must receive exercise too. Learning new songs, or memorizing the words to familiar songs strengthens the brain.
Reason # 4
Self-expression. Singing as a means of self-expression is a medium of release for pent-up emotions. Feelings are not judged when singing about them. Therefore, a level of freedom is reached emotionally when singing. Depression, anger and anxiety is reduced and in most instances completely released.
Reason # 5
Increases self-confidence. Singing increases poise, self-confidence, and develops character through difficulties overcome. Singing brings contentment in a way that no other activity does.
Reason #6
Singing surrounds the brain with healthy chemicals giving us a natural high. And you'll like this - singing actually produces the same chemicals as sex and chocolate.
Whether or not you become a great singer is not nearly as important as becoming a great person. One that is sensitive and understanding. And one that appreciates and understands artistic beauty and mankind.

I totally love this hub, and I second all your reasons! I love to sing, and I always wish my neighbors would sing more too, since I seem to be the noisiest person in the neighborhood!
I'm blessed to be in a musical family - my mother sings, my brother plays the piano and violin, his daughter's play as well, my son plays viola (he has autism) - and my daughter! Oh what a blessing she is! She is starting her second year in choral studies, she is a Soprano 1. Now that she is away in college I do not get to hear her and I miss it! Many times I would be found sitting on the hallway floor.... listening, as she practiced in her bedroom.
LOVE the "Singing in the Rain" video! Great musical!
Thank you vocalcoach - this hub made me happy :)
Thanks so much for reminding us of all the wonderful benefits that singing provides. I particularly love singing in the car on road trips. Hubby and I don't have great singing voices but it still makes us feel good, especially when we're singing upbeat Oldies tunes and broadway tunes like Singing in the Rain.
Voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful and interesting.
I love to sing, but you really wouldn't want to hear me. If it wouldn't bother my fellow tenants, I'd sing anyway! Thanks for the encouragement.
Sing, sing, sing! While I fail to carry the tune, I get an A+ for enthusiasm. I am singing right now. Thank you for that.
Singing is a universally appreciated part of the human equation...an inspirational and informative hub vocalcoach.;)
Oh Audrey how I would love to be able to sing! in tune that is!
lovely hub thank you for sharing.
I agree with all six of your reasons to sing. I love to sing, but those close to me frequently ask me to please STOP. HaHa. Thank you for sharing....
i sing very well though if anyone were to ever listen they would say i was off key always, that my voice was harsh or any number of things but Boy when i am alone in the car on a long drive and the music on the player seduces me i sing alongggggg and DO I SING!!!!!!! i sing for hours at the top of my voice because i want to and enjoy itt.
does it make me a better person? no idea but it certainly made me enjoy your hub Audrey.
haha! you made me laugh..thank you for sharing this to us..i learned something today because of your article..anyway I love to sing too and my favorite artist is Michael Jackson..I love him so much and his songs!
Beautiful hub Audrey. I love to sing and enjoyed reading the benefits. I especially liked that it doesn't matter if your voice is pleasant or not. I think we are all too self conscious of what we sound to others.
I don't know how it happened, but somewhere along the way I learned to love opera (even as a preteen it fascinated me). My children will attest to my attempts at singing along with lovely voices-they would protest loud and clear begging me to stop.
But, when it comes from the heart the ears (for me) turned deaf and I just ignored my children, LOL Did I read that you finished early in the a.m. You are determined to finish aren't you! LOL
Hi, Audrey. This is inspiring information about the joy of singing. I love to sing at the top of my voice accompanying the radio while driving but have to remember to keep my windows closed. Otherwise, traffic halts, charging bulls stop in their tracks, birds fall to earth, and the ocean tide reverses. :)
I love singing and you have good reason about why we should singing. It makes me happy all the time and "healthy" of course. Nice tips and very inspired us. Well done, my friend. My vote always for you!
Prasetio
I would sing if I sounded like Robert Goulet, or Andy Williams or Perry Como, but not Tiny Tim. Great Hub.
vocalcoach - what is your favorite Michael Jackson song? I'm a huge fan of him..My favorite is "Man in the Mirror".. =)
healty bounderies...all this to say..I love singing and it hYou know I grew up in Ireland and most of my memories are of singing, at pubs,on the way to a game, when guests came to our house,on the street and just about every friday night :0)
I did not discover depresssion until I moved to The USA and it was considered rude to sing in public, oddly enough they have serious realtionship issues over here ???...recently I visited Maui and felt at home with the locals and now we are planning to move there...I have missed fun realtionships with as nothing to do with the quality of my voice but the freedom it brings!!!!!!!!!! Great Hub !!!!
Michael :0)
Lol.. Sorry I think something went wrong above..comment is as we say in Ireland arse backwards...but I think you get it!!!!!!
Voted up Coach. As a singer and writer, I was always able to transfer my emotions on a piece of paper. Being able to sing it back in song is emotionally uplifting for the soul. You make great points. Music has become a major part of life for everyone. It feels good being able to sing out loud an emotion or situation that other people can relate too.
I'm still waiting for "Audrey's 'Anybody Can Sing'", voice studios.
^_^
I love to sing when I am alone or walking the dog. Being a lover of nature and the rolling countryside, I like to cheer myself up whilst spending time in the fields that surround the house. I don't sing at home my other half tells me "don't ever give up your day job" lol but one of my other pleasure is I sing to my horse when out riding., It gives him confidence to pass tractors and walk over things that scare him. No it isn't the voice scaring him, it gives him comfort just to listen. My excuse and I am sticking to it. lol
Another make me SMILE Hub, Vocalcoach. My singing belongs only in the SHOWER...There I sound good...NOT! But who cares, Right! Fun (as usual) Read, thanks Friend!
Interesting all the great benefits including physical ones of singing. Thank you for sharing.
You are a very good writer. I was wondering if you could take a look at a story that i wrote called 'The Colors of Blue'. I wrote alot of song to, if you want to take a look. Hope you could take a look,
thanks,
~Emmy
I agree with this Hub! I love to sing, I have recorded two CD'S and I write lyrics as well. I am your Fan now, I like your style! God Bless you!!!! Voted-Up!
Thanks for a great hub! I love to sing. I used to take singing lessons and sing in a choir, but now I just sing st home for pleasure. Singing is a wonderful and joyful activity for me. Voted useful and interesting - and I love the dog's photo and the comment at the end of your hub!
What a lovely hub. I love to sing although there are a few who wish I didn't. I hear a song I love and just have to sing along with it.
Hello, vocalcoach, GREAT hub! Wonderful read, artwork, and lay-out. This subject, singing, is something I cannot do. My wife is a God-gifted singer in our home and I just let her do the singing. You give some fantastic tips here and if I were wanting to sing, I would use these. Still voted up and all across. I am now a fan and follower, if that is okay. Sincerely, Kenneth Avery, from a rural town (Hamilton), in northwest Alabama that makes one think of Mayberry, where Andy and Barney worked. Keep up the great writing.
What a great hub! I love singing, and these are all points that give me an even better reason to do it. Thanks!
Beautiful hub and oh so true, how singing can change our mood. It is good for us even if we don“t have a pleasant voice Singing in the shower will do nicely.
Thanks for sharing.
Great hub, great information about singing. When you are down and lonely I find it best to sing to give you a merry heart. Thank you for sharing rhis great wealth of information. May you be blessed today and always. Best regards.
You ve made the points stand out. Music is a healing food for the soul. Through it we can be informed, entertained and even be educated. A great piece well written from the master. Be blessed
Hi vocalcoach! I agree with your reasons to sing. So very true! Singing really relaxes me and touches my soul when the music is right, which is most of the time. I also sing just to annoy my kids and grandkids but at those times I am purposely off-key and so much fun! :)
Ohhh I love this! Singing truly is an amazing thing. As a singer myself, i can't help but feel the natural happiness that i get when i sing. It brings me comfort in times of sadness, and brings me thrill when im already happy! Great Hub!
I love this fantastic Hub! And what a way to top it off: "Singing in the Rain." Priceless!
I enjoyed reading about the health benefits and psychological benefits of singing. No telling where I'd be today if hadn't sung my whole life.
Thank you very much for the gem. It is a treasure!
Well . . . Life is giving me what I deserve. That's the problem!! :-)
I love singing makes me feel happier, it helps me express my emotions and what not. great hub once again
I can definitely understand what you're saying. I love to sing and write, just entertain in general. I really loved your hub.
